Habitat for Humanity/ Thrivent Builds Worldwide trip to Huite, Guatemala
Out in the middle of the desert in eastern Guatemala, in temperatures that scraped 100 degrees, Habitat and Thrivent held a blitz build with roughly 90 volunteers constructing nine homes in a week.
This was the first Habitat for Humanity Global Village trip in which Matt Flynn participated, and with it came an expectation of (and being comfortable with) the unexpected. Due to a mechanical problem with the flight out of Los Angeles, his plane trip to Guatemala was delayed one day, yet his luggage arrived on time. No worries.
Concrete block masonry walls were built throughout; floor plans averaged about 400 sf. A few homes raced through the installation of their metal roofs and exterior doors.
Activities to entertain the American gringos included soccer with the local kids on a dirt field and a piñata to close off the week's labors.
